Seller Inventory n. This classic compilation of Scandinavian folktales enchants the reader - of any age - not only with unfamiliar and quixotic stories, but with whimsical and gorgeous illustrations. This influential book has inspired jazz composers, fashion designers and many writers; even Theodore Roosevelt s sons, Kermit Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. If this book s magic could be decanted, it would spill forth as the intoxicating perfume of lilies of the valley, alpine fir on winter winds, sea salts, bear fur and the froth of hag s caldrons.

This small book, with its timeless wisdom and depth, is destined to charm future generations as a definitive childhood memory. Item added to your basket View basket. Proceed to Basket. View basket. East of the Sun and West of the Moon.

Seller Image. Hajime's personal story, elements of which are apparently autobiographical, is a moving tale of teenage romance and angst and of mid-life crisis and nostalgia.

There are also some more general ruminations; though slender, these manage to avoid glibness. It's a simple but powerful little novel — this is the first Murakami book I have read, but I'll be reading more. September External links: - buy from Amazon. So for me, South of the Border, West of the Sun is the eventual realization for Hajime that Shinamoto was a distraction in his mind, perhaps even an illusion.

East of the Sun and West of the Moon

But never, ever, west of the sun. So for me this meant that 'the envelope has to go, the feelings for shinamoto have to go' Yet for us as readers, there is this lingering doubt as to whether or not it was ever real. Did Shinamoto ever actually appear, or was it just apart of his crisis? Was Hajime having a nervous breakdown, his own version of hysteria siberiana?

Was it all a fabrication of his mind? OKOK, i've already posted two really big posts but Murakami has a knack for ambiguity, so there's a lot to talk about and speculate. Firstly, the rain. It was my favourite metaphor. Rain literally forces us indoors. So the metaphor is that rain 'forces us inside', and Hajime's crisis is one of identity, memory, of the past.

Help me understand the appeal of South of the border West of the sun.

If you believe that Shinamoto was an illusion, then essentially the rain has a direct correlation with forcing Hajime to go 'inside'. Poetic symbolism, beauutiffulllll. Secondly, the hollowness. Obviously the catalyst for stirring up all these memories of Shinamoto was the picture in the magazine and old acquaintances coming to see him.

Before that Hajime was happy in his marriage. There was still infidelity and all that other stuff, but he rationalized it away and considered it normal. But with the re-emergence of Shinamoto, it was different. Without her he felt hollow and life was meaningless, and so he jumped between sanity and insanity. Remember the "Star-Crossed Lovers" song? But Shinamoto just wants to keep blank. Ok, can't think anymore. Might read some reviews and come back with more ideas later. The stuff about the vultures confused the hell out of me.

I still don't get it.
